Startup100 Q&A

Q: Why was Startup100 created?
A: We saw a need for objective and comparable measurement for startup companies' early success. For investors, Startup100 can be a valuable deal flow source, and for startups, it's interesting benchmarking tool. We also think that the information should be interesting to journalists and job seekers interested in startups.

Q: What does Startup100 measure and how?
A: Startup100 index is a new way to track startups' performance purely from the marketing communications point of view: What kind of online marketing activities the companies do, how well they do it, and how much buzz they generate. In long term we want to analyze, how the marketing performance in different stages correlates with revenue growth and exit values.

Q: How do we define a 'startup'?
A: This is a challenging question, and we might have not come to the final conclusion yet. Wikipedia defines a startup as "a temporary organization designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model". But when does a company stops being a 'startup'? Exits and bankruptcies are clear, but often a startup just gradually turns into a profitable company. We have currently set the limit to 10 years, which means for example that Rovio will be removed from the tracking after November this year. We only add companies that focus on developing their own products for global markets, so we don't include for example consulting companies. However, we do track companies from any industry.

Q: Why is the list different on this email and on the website?
A: At Startup100 you will find the official chart which is updated once a month. We publish the Top-100 list of the about 500 companies that the system currently tracks. If you click on the Change % title on the website (twice), you can see the companies on Top-100, which have gained the most index points the past month. We also publish the top 10 trending companies on this email newsletter and on our Facebook page.

Q: What are the future plans for Startup100?
A: First, some investors have been asking for an access to the full list of the 500 companies we track, as well as additional reports such as historical data and financial information. If you are interested, please reply to this email and let us know. Secondly, we have received a request from about a dozen other countries to expand the list to, and we are currently exploring different opportunities abroad.
